To advance the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems in southern Chile through a biocultural approach, grounded in scientific research, planning, environmental education, and community participation. Our work centers on implementing innovative, collaborative strategies that ensure long-term conservation, contributing to environmental resilience and to improving the livelihoods of local communities.
Fundación Conservación Marina (FCM) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in southern Chile that has worked for 20 years on the conservation of biodiversity and marine ecosystems, through a biocultural approach that integrates scientific research, participatory management, environmental education, and good governance.
Our work is concentrated in the Los Lagos Region, particularly in the wetlands of Maullín, Curaco de Vélez, and Quinchao, in the Chiloé Archipelago — key sites along the migratory route of the Hudsonian godwit and other shorebirds connecting the northern hemisphere with southern South America. To date we have contributed to the protection of 3 marine wetlands with legal recognition as Nature Sanctuaries, and added 5 wetlands to the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN), for a total of more than 10,000 hectares under conservation and management actions.
