Environmental Education Tools for Guides and Local Educators
The course Environmental Education Tools to Strengthen Birding Guides and Local Educators is an initiative of Fundación Conservación Marina's School of Leadership for Nature Conservation (ELICONA). It is aimed at birding guides, nature interpreters, environmental monitors, and local educators connected mainly to the wetlands of Maullín and Chiloé.
The training seeks to build the skills needed to turn birdwatching and nature experiences into meaningful educational processes. The course integrates environmental pedagogy, experiential learning, interpretation, and the planning and delivery of field activities, promoting a more mindful relationship between people, birds, and the ecosystems they inhabit.
For FCM, training local guides and educators is part of a conservation strategy for the Maullín–Calbuco–Coihuín/Chamiza–Chiloé Migratory Bird Corridor. These stakeholders can help communicate the value of wetlands, promote good birdwatching practices, reduce disturbance to wildlife, and strengthen the social value placed on the sites birds use to feed, rest, and breed. In this way, environmental education and birdwatching tourism become concrete tools for the conservation of birds and their habitats.
